This type of dogs are known to be of German origin, and the affenpinscher came from German "affe" meaning ape or monkey. Although they are also from small breed of dogs they are very territorial and are not recommended for younger kids. In the old days the Affenpinscher breed have been around since the 1600, however they were a bit larger, about 12 to 13 inches and are known to be a ratter, they are mainly used for removing rodents from kitchens, granaries, and stables. Today however, they grow to about 9–12 inches in height and only 2.9–6.0 kilogram in weight. They are not susceptible to hot weather as they easily acquire respiratory problems.
